This work is based on the traditional Japanese melody Sakura Sakura, reimagined from a contemporary perspective. Written for marimba and three percussionists, the piece incorporates timbres and elements reminiscent of traditional Japanese instruments.
The first half contrasts the aesthetic of ma—the beauty found in silence and space—with the dynamic power of traditional Japanese rhythms, creating a distinctive interplay of stillness and motion. In contrast, the latter half introduces Latin-inspired rhythms, leading to a lively and spirited exchange between the marimba and the percussionists.
SAKURA—the cherry blossom—symbolizes the spirit of Japanese spring. Beyond its full bloom, even as its petals dance in the wind, one can feel the joy and vitality of life in motion. The work carries the hope that cherry blossoms may dance across the world, connecting hearts and blossoming into peace and friendship.
