From my earliest days as a composer, there has been a special place in my heart for the flute's tonal beauty, expressive fluidity, and brilliant virtuosity, and it is these special virtues that I have aimed to celebrate in Solo.

California-born composer Howard Hersh studied piano in Los Angeles and composition at Stanford University. Terry Riley calls him "one of the masters of California's thriving new music scene...this is music of the Heart, guided by a keen intelligence."
His works draw inspiration from many sources: tonal and atonal, traditional and avantgarde, representational and abstract, the inner and outer worlds. They range from solo instruments to orchestral works and opera, and have been performed at venues throughout the United States and Europe.
His music has been honored with a number of awards from organizations that include ASCAP, Meet the Composer, the American Symphony Orchestra League, the American Composers Forum, New Music USA, and the Irvine Foundation.
Hersh has also contributed to music through his work as a conductor, producer of contemporary music concerts, broadcaster, and writer. He has directed several new music groups, including the San Francisco Conservatory of Music's New Music Ensemble, which he founded, and has served as Music Director of public radio station KPFA and Program Annotator for the San Francisco Symphony.
The Pony Concerto, a CD of chamber pieces, was released by Albany Records in 2007. Angels and Watermarks, a collection of keyboard music performed by Brenda Tom, was released in 2014. Madam's Tavern, an album of recent works, will be available in 2017.
He lives in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
