      Preface
After decades of writing film scores, arranging for singers, Broadway performers and everything in between, master composer, arranger, orchestrator, conductor and educator Chris Boardman has now focused his attention on the concert hall. What better way to start than to showcase a performer, marimba virtuso Ksenija Komljenovic, who was one of his most exceptional students?

The story of a young person who dreams of becoming a virtuoso serves as the throughline upon which “Episodes” is based. It begins at that moment when a young person becomes intoxicated by the power of music and chooses the arduous path of becoming a master of their instrument. Throughout their journey they face self-doubt and negative feedback from the people around them. Though often well-intentioned, these comments test their resolve. The work alternates between focusing on technical mastery and personal reflection caused by the negative feedback. This results in further obstacles and frustrations for them to overcome. However, like most artists, their passion for art is unquenchable. Giving up is not an option. So, they continue to strive for technical mastery while pursuing their goal of self-actualization.

The piece culminates with a rousing, joyful finale signifying that their struggles have not been in vain and that they have indeed achieved their goals of technical mastery and artistic expression.

“My intent in writing “Episodes” is to remind the listener to never give up hope that their wildest dreams are indeed possible”.
