Preface
"En route" is a French phrase, also used in the English language, which means "on the way" or "during the course of a journey". I began composing this piece in the spring of 2022. It was towards the end of the coronavirus pandemic, and we were beginning to see the light at the end of that tunnel, but many aspects of life were still affected by it. Because the pandemic period caused enormous suffering for so many, I didn't feel comfortable telling people that, for me, it was actually a very positive time characterised by personal growth. My situation was such that I had time for some in-depth explorations and was opening myself to new ideas. I was on the way to a new place personally and this piece was a reflection of that.
I have been in love with Balinese music for a long time and have written many pieces that are, in various ways, inspired by it. En Route is one of those. Typical for Balinese music is the weaving together of multiple parts to create a unified whole. I have been particularly interested in exploring this aspect of that music, adapting it to my needs and finding my own ways of implementing it. The second half of En Route, in particular, is an example of this.

About the composer +
-
Rob Waring has been a central figure in Norway’s music scene since he moved to Oslo in 1981. He studied classical percussion at the Juilliard School in New York at the same time as he devoted himself to jazz vibraphone and improvised music in various forms. Combining the roles of percussionist, vibraphonist, composer and educator, his work spans a broad spectrum of musical approaches and styles.
Rob has composed numerous commissioned works for soloists, large and small ensembles, jazz groups, percussion ensembles, choirs, as well as electroacoustic music. He has recorded extensively, most recently in John Surman's Words Unspoken quartet and in a vibraphone/marimba duo together with David Friedman on the album Wayfarers.
Rob Waring is Associate Professor of percussion at the Norwegian Academy of Music where he teaches classical percussion, jazz vibraphone and Balinese Gamelan music.
