        Preface
I was originally inspired by Danish folk group Helene Blum & Harald Haugaard Band to write my first folk song arrangement, Urtegården, and I am forever grateful and indebted to this band which inspired me to my first out of several folk song arrangements.

I brought Urtegården to Europa Cantat Junior in Ghent 2023 and introduced it to a large group consisting of talented young singers from across the world. I was really happy to test this Danish folk song on them, and I am deeply grateful for the response from these singers and their wonderful conductors who have recommended this piece to colleagues in the international community. I did not imagine that there would be such an interest in Danish folk songs, but I am very happy to learn that there are both singers and conductors out there brave enough to take on the difficult task of programming Danish music in Danish! And I would like to thank anybody who acquires this piece and maybe recommends it to others to perform.

Singing in Danish can be challenging, I know. As a choral conductor, I have also ventured out into many different languages that are very difficult for me, and it has been immensely helpful when native speakers have helped me, or when composers themselves have created additional resources to help overcome this obstacle. That is why I have created sound files for the pieces. Here you will hear me read the lyrics, and also sing the melody in Danish. These files can be required upon request.

Both UrtegårdenRoselil and Det var en lørdag aften have been recorded by my female choir SORA (www.koretsora.com).

  • About the composer +
    • Birgitte Næslund Madsen (born 1971) has a degree in Musicology, English and French from the University of Aarhus.

Her musical profile is characterized by an equal respect and interest in both classical, contemporary, popular and folk music, which can be seen in the very diverse repertoire of the different choirs who collaborate with Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, folk music groups, as well as some of the most popular artists in Denmark.

Birgitte has founded several choirs, among them the choir EVE (gold medal winners in ECG in 2017 and 2019 and finalist in Denmark’s Got Talent in 2018) that merged with the older singers of Aarhus Pigekor to become SORA, in August 2023. From 2017–2021 she worked with the youth talent program at the National Opera of Denmark as a choirmaster and conductor of productions.

Currently, she is the conductor of the choirs SORA, Aarhus Pigekor and Aarhus Juniorkor, which all belong to the Aarhus Musikskole.

Birgitte also works as an atelier leader at choral festivals in Denmark and abroad, and is also invited as a jury member at international choral competitions.
