WYSIWYG for percussion quartet and tape was written in 2000 for Elbtonal Percussion. It was first recorded for the ensemble’s second CD, Time Twist.
WYSIWYG is an early composition and is characteristic of the ensemble’s formative years. At that time, Elbtonal Percussion frequently incorporated electronics and pre-produced playbacks into their work in order to distinguish themselves from other percussion groups. This approach helped them develop a highly distinctive sound, which is especially evident on albums such as Drumtronic, Four Elements, and Plays Stewart Copeland.
The composition blends elements of experimental contemporary music with Tom Waits–inspired grooves and Zappa-esque melodic ideas.
In addition, the piece features an extensive drum set part, which is relatively uncommon in classical music. This part can be interpreted quite freely—not every note must be played exactly as written. Similarly, the choice of percussion instruments, including “trash” or metallic sounds, can be assembled with imagination and a playful approach to unusual timbres.
