    • I admire many of our classic film composers, such as John Williams and Lalo Schifrin, who both have an outstanding ability to create the unsettling atmosphere that arises when someone is being chased on the silver screen. Start by listening to Scorpio’s View from the movie Dirty Harry, where Lalo Schifrin uses different tempos in the drums and an incredibly eerie, yet wonderful harmony in the other instruments. Then continue with the main theme from Jaws and listen to how John Williams so simply, yet brilliantly, lets the strings increase the rhythmic intensity, leading to the eighth-note movement and chase theme.

Tôru Takemitsu was a master in creating a harmonic sound landscape and atmosphere, both in his orchestral works and in many of the hundred works he composed for film. Finish by listening to his Funeral Music from the movie Black Rain.

Rush is my attempt to create music that reflects the unsettling feeling of being chased or feeling hunted. The middle section of the piece lacks pulse, a standstill where the instruments create a reflective soundscape and we get a chance to escape from worry. Like a cold shiver, the silence is abruptly broken by an aggressive twelve-tone melody. The chase resumes, the pulse increases, and the unison rhythms drive us inexorably towards the definitive end.

The piece Rush is written in two versions – one for piano & marimba, the other for mallet trio. In both versions, marimba part A is identical.
