Mysa is a Swedish word with no direct English translation. Roughly translated, it means to be comfortable and content. This piece came out of a late night practice session in college. I was tired and needed a break from my other pieces. This became almost like a meditation for me, repeating the simple melody over some of my favorite chords. Listening back to it now, it reminds me of those peaceful nights alone in a practice room or sitting in my room lit by dim Christmas lights listening to a vinyl record.

      Performance Notes

This piece should be played relaxed and freely. Think of it like a meditation, embracing each chord change, each note as you play it. Tempo should fluctuate through the beginning and closing sections. In the middle section at measure 17, be very expressive with dynamics, rubato, etc. Let all of your worries out every time you play through the music.

“Mysa” would make a great light addition to a heavy program or played as a short encore. It is also great for someone starting 4 mallets on vibraphone because of the free and simple pedaling.
